TalentGrid, being at the forefront of tech recruitment and industry insights, presents a brief report by delving into the state of AI for software developers in Turkiye..

To understand the evolving landscape of software development and artificial intelligence (AI), we conducted a comprehensive survey with over 400 software developers. As we navigate through the intricate tapestry of AI adoption, talent development, and the evolving socio-economic fabric, this report aims to provide a high-level roadmap for both developers and industry stakeholders.

We are only at the beginning of an illuminating journey, as with this report, we only just started to unravel the current state of AI, uncover untapped potential, and shed light on the path forward for software developers in Turkey. Generative AI tools are widely adopted among software developers in Turkey.

83% of software developers say that they actively use AI tools in their daily work.

AI tools found a solid place within the programming process.

In the programming process, the code generation step is the most common part that AI tools are used for, as 67% of the software developers say. Code optimization follows it with 53%, bug detection with 49%, code review with 39%, and data analysis with 19%.

While one of the biggest obstacles when programming is the availability and accessibility of AI tools and resources, developers think it’s no issue, with 68% saying they are widely available and accessible.

How would you rate the availability and accessibility of AI-related tools and resources for developers?

ChatGPT was the most used search engine among dev community, but things can change in 2024.

After ChatGPT’s massive popularity and penetration in 2023, many companies followed in their footsteps and launched their own AI search engines. ChatGPT remains a solid position with 81% of the developers saying they used ChatGPT in 2023. However, only 46% said they want to use it in 2024. Compared to it, Google’s Bard has a lower gap between the used and the want-to-be-used.

Bing AI hasn’t yet been used by anyone but people are curious about it, with 21% saying they want to use it in 2024.

Which AI-powered search engines have you used over the past year, and which do you want to use over the next year?

Github Copilot is the most popular AI dev tool among software developers.

Among the AI-powered dev tools, Github Copilot is the most used and want-to-be-used dev tool by software developers in Turkey. While 62% of them say they used it in 2023, 47% say they want to use it also in 2024. AWS Codewhisperer hasn’t penetrated enough in the programming world in Turkey but it’s not fully overlooked either.

Developers are willing to adjust their skills accordingly to AI, but companies still need to catch up on it.

Developers are already investing in upskilling as AI continues to grow exponentially. 80% of the respondents say they’re adjusting their skills to keep up with the wave.

While individuals are confident it is worth it, companies are taking it slow with the shift. Only 55% of developers’ companies encourage them to integrate AI into their workflow.

While most software engineers use AI tools, almost half are concerned about the potential risks.

We’ve seen that Generative AI tools are very popular among software developers. However, the possible adverse effects of AI are not being overlooked.

While 46% of developers say they are concerned about AI’s potential risks and societal impact, only 32% of them are worried about the ethical implications of AI in software development.

One might say AI is another hype that will fade, but developers disagree.

2023 was AI’s year in every aspect, so everyone has their thoughts on whether it will fade like most trends in the tech world. With 59%, over half of the software developers think it will stay for good and redefine work.

The data in this report claims to represent only some of the developer population in Turkey. Any time the term, ‘software engineer, ‘developer’ or ‘software developer’ is used, it refers to the developers who took this survey.

TalentGrid conducted a survey to find out more about the state of AI among the software developers in Turkey. A total of 377 people took the online survey.

We hosted the survey itself on Jotform and recruited respondents via emails sent to more than 40 000 tech talents within the TalentGrid community and through social media posts to the public. Data was anonymised in accordance with GDPR guidelines and is housed separate to TalentGrid’s platform data. Percentages may not always add to 100% due to rounding.
